I’m just following the paper airplane
I walked off the edge. Where did the path go? I’m just following the paper airplane. I don’t know where I am. I might trip and fall, but I think this is the right way...
That’s exactly what I wanted. I painted this to feel ambiguous and a bit magical, so people could discover things on their own. It’s background art for my new children’s book, “I Wish I Could Fly,” and I wanted a space that felt like a dream—a place where paper airplanes slice through the starry sky and nothing is quite what it seems. Is it a cityscape? A landscape? Who knows. I painted it with wild, vibrant colors, then drew in stark, black-and-white trees that cut right through the colorful chaos. My black-and-white stripes are in there, too—a quiet way to keep my brother’s music in the rhythm of the work.
The art was created for a sense of wonder. The patterns don’t repeat, so every side of these sneakers is a little discovery.
If I can’t be barefoot: I’m wearing these. They’re for people who do their own thing and aren’t afraid to show it.
