A lighthouse stands in a surreal world, steady but strange. It began with a photo I took while lying beneath it, looking up at a tangle of live oaks and palms. The sky—split between deep turquoise and lime green—defies nature and adds emotional charge. Paper airplanes drift through the scene, their dotted and striped trails suggesting ideas, direction, and the uncertainty of choice. Bold, twisting branches veer into unexpected shapes. One morphs into an abstract, anthropological creature—like the way life sometimes surprises us. A black-and-white striped tree honors my brother; a brilliant pianist lost too soon to Alzheimer’s. A yellow submarine lurks at the water’s edge, a playful detail from family stories—my granddaddy served in one during World War I.
